Moving Expenses

Use this form to calculate taxpayer’s moving expense deduction for a move related to the start of work at a new principal place of work. If the new workplace is outside the United States or its possessions, taxpayer must be a U.S. citizen of resident alien to deduct his expenses.

If taxpayer qualifies to deduct expenses for more than one move, use a separate form for each move.

Line 1:
Enter on this line number of miles from old home to new workplace of taxpayer.

Line 2:
Enter on this line number of miles from old home to old workplace of taxpayer.

Line 3:
If line 3 is more than 50, then taxpayer can deduct moving expenses. If it is less than 50, taxpayer is not eligible for claiming moving expenses and cannot file this form.

Armed Forces: If this taxpayer/spouse doe not meet the 50 miles distance test and time tests of 39 week, and move is due to an armed forces permanent change of station, then select the checkbox after line 3. This is the exception of qualifying for deduction.

Moving Expenses
Line 1:
Enter on this line the amount paid to pack, crate, and move household goods and personal effects. Taxpayer can also include the amount paid to store and insure household goods and personal effects within any period of 30 days in a row after the items were moved from old home and before they were delivered to new home.

Line 2:
Enter on this line the amount paid to travel from old home to new home. This includes transportation and lodging on the way and costs for the day taxpayer arrived. The members of taxpayer’s household do not have to travel together or at the same time, but expenses for one trip per person are allowed.

If taxpayer uses his own vehicle(s), can figure the expenses by using either;

  • Actual out-of-pocket expenses for gas and oil, or
  • Mileage at the rate of 18 cents a mile

Taxpayer can add parking fees and tolls to the amount claimed under either method.

Line 4:
The amount on this line comes from Form W-2 line 12 with code “P”.

Line 5:
Program will check the checkbox “No” on line 5 if line 3 is less than line 4 and difference of these lines will be transferred to Form 1040 line 7 or Form 1040NR line 8.

If line 3 is more than line 4 then program will check the checkbox “Yes” on line 5 and difference of these lines will be transferred to Form 1040 or Form 1040NR line 26.
