Certain Gambling Winnings

The W-2G Statement can be for Taxpayer or Spouse. If filing status of taxpayer is married filing jointly and W-2G statement is for spouse, then you are required to check the box for spouse at the top of the form.

Use form W-2G, to report gambling Winnings and any Federal Income tax withheld on those winnings. The requirements for reporting and Withholding depend on the Type of gambling, the amount of the Gambling winnings, and generally the ratio of the winnings to the Wager.
The types of the gambling that should be reported on this form:

  • Horse, Racing, Dog Racing, Jai Alai, and other Wagering Transactions.
  • Sweepstakes, Wagering Pools, and Lotteries.
  • Bingo, Keno and Slot Machines.

Further if it is applicable to taxpayer, then you are required to check the checkbox whether the W-2GU statement is handwritten, typed, altered or corrected.

Line 1:
Enter On this line amounts if you have:

  • $600 or more in gambling winnings and the payout is at least 300 times the amount of the wager (except winnings from Bingo, Keno and slot machines).
  • $1200 or more in gambling winnings from bingo or slot machines.
  • $1500 or more in proceeds (the amount of winnings less the amount of the wager0 from Keno.
  • Any gambling winnings subject to federal income tax withholding.

Line 2:
Enter the amount of federal income tax withheld, whether 25% regular gambling withholding or 28% backup withholding.

Line 3:
Enter the type of wager if other than a regular race bet.

Line 4:
Enter the date of the winning event. This is not the date the money was paid if it was paid after the date of the race.

Line 6:
Enter the race (or game) applicable to the winning ticket.

Line 7:
Enter the amount of additional winnings from identical wagers.

Line 8 or line 10:
Enter the cashier and/or window number making the winning payment.

Line 11 and line 12:
Enter the identification numbers of the person receiving the winnings.
The identification nos. can from driver’s license, social security card, or voter registration etc.

Line 13:
Enter the abbreviated name of the state and your state identification number.

Line 14:
Enter the amount of state income tax withheld if any.
In case if there are gambling losses then enter on the line below for the amount to be claimed as a deduction on schedule A.
